DCU: Title Change to Superman Could Spark a Trend

The definitive starter of James Gunn’s incoming DCU has landed its main cast over the course of many months and has now officially began principal photography.

In light of this, James Gunn (who is fond of social media) took to the platform to share the news.

Upon sharing the news, the filmmaker also revised the title of the forthcoming feature. What was originally titled Superman: Legacy has gone on to drop the ‘Legacy‘. Simply making the title of the feature now read ‘Superman‘.
Which is more than an obvious nod or duplication of the title to Chris Reeve’s first feature outing as titular hero.

This is largely unsuprising, seeing as James Gunn has in fact undergone an interview in which he clearly mentioned 1978’s Superman as one of his best CBMs. Even going on to further state that his iteration is largely inspired by that feature film.

However, with James Gunn now making such drastic changes. Is it possible this is the last time we see this?. Or could this spark a trend for the new DC cinematic universe.

Granted this isn’t the first time CBMs have changed names so close to the start of production. As the fourth Captain America movie by Marvel Studios also falls into similar trappings. With its subtitle changing from ‘New World Order‘ to ‘Brave New World‘.

But given that the MCU has had a standard track record of announcing projects and sticking with them all the way. It’s unlikely such will play again. At least for a while.

However, James Gunn’s DCU is still gestating and already a number projects have been given confirmed titles to work with. But with reality and intention behind the project being laid to bare when the cameras start rolling or are about to roll. Could title changes resurface?. We’ll have to wait and see.

Superman is currently in production but opens in cinemas July 11, 2025.
