Eternals: A Film Analysis

One of the more experimental endeavours from the MCU which is none other than 2021’s Eternals. Has since been met with criticisms and controversies since its debut.

So much so that it marked the first rotten score for the franchise. Something which has now become commonplace following the advent of Phase 5.

But for all its shortcomings, Eternals also features unique elements which guarantees that the feature is not a total failure.

Below are some positives and negatives that Eternals boasts.

Positives

Visuals – Chloe Zhao’s exploitation of naturalistic visual elements makes this grueling 2hour+ superhero epic at least watchable. As the movie also maintains a high quality of visual effects.

Controversy – While this is more of a subplot, it ultimately presents a worthy argument — that sees that both sides of spectrum are able to reasonably support their case. It is also reminiscent of Thanos’ universe decimating claim, which many have since called the purple titan mad for.

Costume Design – As the immortal group of superheroes strut their stuff on the big screen. They look good doing it too as each had a peculiar yet familiar feel to their costumes. Giving credence to the family narrative, the characters are known to exhibit within the film.

Negatives

Character Arcs – Beyond Gemma Chan’s Sersi, most if not all of the characters fail to shine. Though they each have their moments within the film. But by the end however, a lot is still lacking for one to have been fully invested in these characters.

Inconsistencies – From Thena’s Mahd Wry to Sprite’s underdeveloped emotional struggle. Marvel Studios’ Eternals is riddled with more questions than it answers. With the antagonistic factor even being a confusing threeway between the Deviants, Ikaris and the Celestials.

Tedious Exposition – While the Eternals does deliver a handful of action set pieces (especially in its 3rd act). The exposition sequence doesn’t really help, particularly because it adds to the movie’s intimidating runtime.

With a sequel seemingly confirmed in the future of the MCU. The hope is things are far better than this initial outing.
