Grown-ish Season 6: What Could Be In Store For The Lover Boys
As majority might already know, Grown-ish (stylised as grown•ish) is a spinoff series from ABC’s Black-ish. The series started out as an exploration of Zoey’s college life but eventually morphed into Andre Jr.’s college exploration. Following the show’s fifth season.
Andre Jr has even gone on to fully take up voiceover duties for show. As the season entered its sixth and what will be its final season.
The conclusion of the series is doubly a conclusion for the serialised ish franchise as well. With Black-ish having concluded with an 8-season run back in 2022 and Mixed-ish being discontinued after just two seasons back in 2021.
Hence, the stage is more than set for the Johnson family to finally take their leave.
But the outro will take awhile as the second half of Grown-ish sixth season won’t release till next year. Thus culminating in a 10-year [small screen] journey for the Johnson family.
However, the focus of this article lies on two major characters from Grown-ish, Andre Jr. & Aaron. Specifically, how their romantic relationships will align by the second half and eventual end of the series. Seeing as the season did in fact do a number on these two gentlemen with respect to their dating life.
Then there’s also the added fact it doesn’t resolve this issue just before we hit the midway point. This hints at this being a part of how their stories eventually conclude.
What’s In Store For Aaron
Being the oldest, Aaron is first in line. Simply speaking, his relationship with Zoey has been one of the most interesting aspects of the show. Since the show’s inception. Which makes it heavy to accept their breakup in S6, E2.
Although the argument can be made that it’s for best. It doesn’t make the reality of the situation any easier to accept.
Moreover, judging by questionable girlfriend cred that Edie now has. Could this be the moment that pushes Aaron to once again seek out Zoey in hopes of reuniting?.
Because it is so glaringly obvious Aaron is yet to forget about Zoey. Same way (we assume) she is also struggling with getting over Aaron.
Reuniting these star-crossed lovers would be a fine way to end the show, but a necessary and proper buildup has to be in place. As we’ve already seen these two fall apart and reunite so many times.
So a final reunion should in fact trump what others have dished out.
What’s In Store For Andre
Moving on to the current star of the show, Andre Jr. Who has chosen to now go by Andre. His relationship with close friend turned girlfriend Annika has also hit the rocks. And it wouldn’t be the first time.
So while a reunion is possible for these two as well. A new contender for Andre’s heart has seemingly sprung up — in the person of Kiela.
Granted, there isn’t enough to justify this just yet but one major hint does exist.
In S5 E8, Andre is objectified by Cal U when he is given 5 stars on the school’s infamous “D List”. This rating was courtesy of Kiela, who had previously hooked up with Andre, prompting such a reaction. While sexual tensions are to be expected from hormonal young adults. Going as far as awarding Andre with such “an honour” meant more for Kiela than many might realise.
However, if the star-crossed lovers trope also applies to Annika and Andre once more, then this hypothetical matchmaking can be deemed dead on arrival.
Once again, as Grown-ish enters its final moments. Fan expectations are high and for obvious reasons. But this writer simply hopes the characters are left in a much better place than we met them. Because that itself defines growth and being grown. And for a show that is all about perpetuating growth, it only seems like the way to go.
Grown-ish season 6 is set to release its remaining batch of episodes early 2024.
Seasons 1 – 5 are all available for download or streaming.
