John Wick Chapter 5: Studio’s Decision Raises Concerns
The John Wick franchise is currently experiencing an all-time high. Thanks largely to the massive success of the 4th installment in the mainline film franchise.
Moreover, the film franchise has embraced the idea of a shared cinematic universe. Branching out into spinoff features and serialized endeavours.
However, even with all this and the conclusive nature of John Wick Chapter 4. Lionsgate wants to keep the cash coming and have quickly renewed John Wick for a 5th Chapter.
Let the Dead Lie Still
While the idea of spinoffs remains a solid move to cash in on the notoriety of the main franchise. A spinoff that refocuses the franchise away from the main character could be the way forward and not a John Wick Chapter 5.
The reason for this is simple, John Wick Chapter 4 ends the title character’s arc in a gratifying manner excluding his supposed death.
But even the death is already debatable in the wake of a possible Chapter 5. As the death will have to be retconned in some way, to allow for the title character’s presence within the feature.
Moreover, a John Wick feels unnecessary and would undue most of the good will of the earlier 4 Chapters, especially Chapter 4.
Because at this point, it seems Lionsgate wants to do what’s best for Studio pockets and not the franchise.
Cases abound as many long-running franchises are slowly losing steam. Either due to existing after their expiry date or non-qualitative storytelling because the Studios are in a hurry to keep cashing in on the hype.
Lionsgate would be unwise to allow the franchise suffer this pitfall.
Ballerina opens in cinemas June 7, 2024.
