Ms. Marvel Series Set Mutant Precedent Ahead Of The Retcon
Ms. Marvel series of last year brought with it one of the major talking points in the MCU, outside of the multiversal happenings.
The talking point essentially is the retcon of the titular character as a mutant.
Which is now even being portrayed in Marvel Comics following the new Ms. Marvel comic series, Ms. Marvel: The New Mutant.
It is also worth noting that this comic series is being co-written by the character’s actress, Iman Vellani.
Unveiling the Precedent
As many know at this point, the retcon happened in show’s finale episode. But earlier aspects of the show including the finale, a certain happening may have already connected the titular character to the Mutants. Long before the retcon.
As is with every superhero project, there is usually a requirement for a big climatic boss fight. For Ms. Marvel, the finale features a confrontation between Ms. Marvel & Kamran vs. the DODC (Department of Damage Control). Led by Agent Deever.
With the seeds for the showdown planted throughout the series as the DODC can be regarded as a hunter of sorts. With the titular character serving as a prey.
That is up until Kamran enters the picture and becomes the target instead.
As these events unfold, upon close inspection, it can be likened to the Marvel Mutant struggle. Which for the uninitiated, amounts to the fact that Mutants are usually hunted and/or hated by humanity usually for the way they look.
This of course can’t be said for other superpowered entities within the Marvel sphere. Many of which are adored.
Beyond just being hunted though, similarities abound as to how their being hunted. Which usually requires the use of high/advanced tech.
Stating the Similarities
With reference to the X-Men animated series, mutants were usually hunted using Sentinels [towering robots that have been estimated to be about three stories tall].
The less ambitious Ms. Marvel series however makes use of Stark tech drones from Spider-Man: Far From Home & also armoured vehicles and weapons fitted with the Stark Tech. drones’ weaponry.
However one slices it, war on Mutant-kind has been a pivotal staple of the stories from the X-Men. As well as many other mutant entities within Marvel media.
Hence, by [loosely] tapping into this notion, Ms. Marvel establishes it’s ties with the Mutant-dom. Therefore implying the character could in fact be a forerunner for the entry of Mutants into the MCU. Alongside Deadpool in his the upcoming threequel. Deadpool 3.
Finally as the Mutants inch ever closer to the MCU, the narrative of segregation and gentrification against Mutants should be continued.
As it is not only a staple of their story but it could make for some interesting contrast(s) between the societal perceptions of them and that of the Avengers.
All episodes of Ms. Marvel are available for download or streaming.
Ms. Marvel is also set to return in The Marvels when it opens in Cinemas November 10, 2023.
Deadpool is currently set for theatrical release May 3, 2024.
