Nickelodeon’s Avatar: The Fish Out of Water Element

The Avatar animated series from Nickelodeon. Both The Legend of Aang and The Legend of Korra are some of the most revered Ip that the network boasts.

These shows especially The Legend of Aang forever changed the animation landscape in modern cinema.

So much so that it experienced something of an uproar back in 2020 on Netflix. Years after its debut and conclusion from 2005 – 2008.

This uproar was then recently fueled by a mostly commendable live-action reimagining by Netflix yet again. As a way of jumping on the bandwagon of notable press the franchise is getting of late.

A journey back in time to the animated shows reveals both protagonists of both shows weren’t so different from each other. At least, at the inception of their stories.

Addressing the Similarities

Beginning with The Legend of Aang. Avatar Aang as many are familiar with began his journey 100 years after the fact. This of course meant that, Aang much like Steve Rogers/Captain America was time displaced and was stepping into a world he knew next to nothing about.

Same can be said for Korra. Whose wide-eyed optimism was in response to the possibilities that Republic City had to offer.

That is until, encountering Amon and his equalists faction.

On one hand, Aang found himself in a world that was unfamiliar. And on the other hand, it’s a case of immigration/culture shock.

Co-creators, Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko would later go on to uniquely explore both Aang and Korra. But the start of both being similar in execution also brilliantly mirrors how audiences may have felt consuming these Legends for the first time.
