School Spirits: Burning Concerns The Future of the Series Should Address

School Spirits is a teen, mystery drama series from Paramount that premiered early this year and was met with both critical & general acclaim that more than ensured its continuity via a sophomore season. And also because, Season 1 ended with a lot of uncertainties.

Of which, here are some burning concerns that at the very least a future season could help shed light on.

After school, Afterlife

While lost souls haunting the halls and grounds of a high school is nothing new. The distinction here is that high school has become some kind of Purgatory. As it is revealed that the ‘school spirits’ can also transcend via a deep sense of closure in regards to issues surrounding the actual person’s death. Which is what is ultimately responsible for tieing them to the school.

However, within the season, only one person’s spirit transcends. But it is teased that others could in fact transcend.

Though beyond the conceptual relevance to the story. Could there be a legitimate [in-story] reason for why the spirits of those that die at Split River High remain there?.

If it just so happens that the graphic novels have no answer to this then this might go unanswered. But time and again, adaptation has proved that what is in the source material needn’t always be.

Rules of Communication

Very quickly the show debunks its claims that spirits can’t interact with the living. As this is made possible through Simon & Maddie.

However, this is touted as an unprecedented happening, largely because Maddie didn’t necessarily die. But even then how is it possible that Simon is the only one capable of interacting with Maddie?.

Could it be as a result of the close bond between them or is there something else at play?. Season 2 will do well to provide answers.

The Janet Situation

Within this first season, Janet is an offscreen character who strongly makes a case for presence being more than just physical.

Because while much is never known about her, largely due to vague answers given by spirit teacher, Mr Martin. The constant curiosity by other spirit characters to know more about her causes her to remain present within the story. Though its simply through word of mouth.

This curiosity also leads into an active investigation into the character which still doesn’t yield much answers.

Even from an audience perspective.

So it is the belief that Janet will [at the very least] make an appearance, come season 2.

Mr. Enigma

The unsuspecting spirit teacher, Mr. Martin proved to be more than meets the eye by the end of the season. Firstly his vagueness surrounding the Janet character & her transcendence and then his bunker of secrets. And as well, it’s also kind of awkward he appears to be only teacher stuck in the high school purgatory that is populated by students. Suffice it to say, however it seems, one thing is certain. Mr. Martin is being touted as a red herring — which in this case implies, he knows a lot more than what he’s let on thus far. Hence, when season 2 unveils, the hope is more of him is unveiled as well.

Dead or Alive

A major resolution that needs to happen in season 2 is the issue of the Maddie double. Which is in fact her real body being possessed by the aforementioned Janet. So how did this happen?.

Well if memory serves right, there wasn’t any context relating to this throughout the entirety of the first season. Moreover, there’s also the fact that the now ‘Janet-possessed’ Maddie was seen fleeing the town of Split River in the season’s final moments via road transport. Which sums up the cliffhanger ending of the season.

So where is she headed?.

But more importantly, why wait until almost getting caught by the trio of Claire, Xavier & Nicole?.

What could she have been doing in the interim besides maybe making sure her possession of Maddie’s body was reinforced?.

Questions abound under this [particular] issue and a sophomore season would really help to begin peeling off the layers.

With School Spirits, there’s no shortage to the mysteries that encompass the series. And since it has been renewed for another season, one can expect not only preexisting issues to be granted the necessary attention. Because new ones could pop up. Which could mean more seasons of the show could be on the horizon.

Provided the intrigue that has now captured the hearts and minds of audiences continues to be impressive as it currently is.
