Major Shake-Up in Scream 7 Amidst the Exit of Franchise’s Current Leads

Following Melissa Barrera’s ouster and Jenna Ortega’s withdrawal from the Scream franchise. How will the upcoming Scream 7 retool its narrative to fit current realities?

The Scream movies are notoriously enjoyed for their hard hitting plot twists and now, behind the scene info surrounding development on the 7th installment is absolutely bewildering.

Just on Wednesday, it was confirmed that the franchise has lost its two leads, The Carpenter sisters. Though for various reasons, this is still a huge hurdle the franchise will have to make it through.

Fortunately however, Spyglass is still intent on adding Scream 7 to the franchise filmography.

Losing the Carpenter Sisters

Melissa Barrera who plays the older sibling, Sam Carpenter was ejected from the franchise on the grounds of what was termed as anti-Semitic reposting on social media. Regarding the Hamas-Israel conflict.

As for the younger Tara Carpenter, played by the unequivocally talented Jenna Ortega. Her reason for taking leave of the franchise hinges on a scheduling conflict with the sophomore season of her Netflix hit, Wednesday. Though she is also currently filming the Beetlejuice sequel, which is in its final stage by the way.

Following the quasi-reboot that was 2022’s Scream (also considered as Scream 5). The role of franchise caretaker(s) was handed over to the Carpenter sisters.

A role which was previously held by franchise alum, Sidney Prescott for a total of 4 films in the franchise. But it seems the Carpenter sisters might not get the chance to come close to this record.

Scream 7 Prospects

Though Scream 7 and potentially the franchise at large may have to begin hunting for new leads. Scream 7 could also do well to satisfactorily bring an end to Sidney’s story within the franchise.

Moreover, rumours swirling round now is that Spyglass is not only eyeing Neve Campbell for a Sidney Prescott comeback after her less than ideal absence in Scream VI. But also Patrick Dempsey’s return as the [sus] Detective Mark Kincaid from 2000’s Scream 3.

In addition to this, one can also be allowed to speculate the return of Courtney Cox’s Gale Weathers. Who was seen previously in both requel films and managed to escape death at the hands of Ghostface in Scream VI.

Although regardless of who is in or not, the Scream requel movies have shown that the creators know how to modernize the story whilst paying homage to its legacy.

So though Director Christopher Landon and Writers, James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick have their work cut out for them. Hope still remains that Scream 7 should equally be a hit just like its immediate predecessors.

Because as Variety perfectly summed it up in their article, “All it takes is a bloody good idea”.
