Shadow and Bone Season 3: Uncertainty Surrounds Netflix’s Renewal Decision.

The Netflix Shadow and Bone series, adapted from a fantasy novel series by Leigh Bardugo began in 2021 to immense acclaim which saw a [nearly] quick turnaround when it came to renewal for its sophomore season, which would later arrive early this year. And even though the 2nd season was met with a lesser viewing intensity when compared to other hits on the streamer. It’s ultimately not a failure (even by the streamer standards thus far). But the unwavering silence concerning a renewal for a third installment does warrant some anxiety.

The streamer’s annual global fan event, TUDUM which took place nearly a month ago also saw news about the show absent from its lineup. Which then raises the question, could Netflix be planning to axe the show after just two seasons?.

Of course, it’s all speculation as the streamer as neither confirmed whether or not the show is on the chopping block. But with a prolonged scarcity of news regarding its renewal, signs point towards an abrupt end for the series. And if such were to be the case, it would really be disheartening for the fan base and even the crew. Whose passion and respect for the source material is on full display throughout the series. Not to mention following the renewal of the 2nd season, spin-offs were being planned. Particularly, a Six of Crows spin-off set to focus on the adventures of The Crows is said to have been developed.

And while one may not speak freely for others, the actors attached to these roles so far, have shown no sign of letting up. So what could infact be Netflix’s hesitance to greenlight a renewal and continuation of the serialised franchise?.

Well, it mostly boils down to viewership numbers. As earlier stated, the viewership numbers for the recent season of the series do not give it a lot of bragging rights, as far as the streamer is concerned. Which is why newer shows like The Night Agent and The Diplomat were favoured over the series.

Then there’s also contractual issues as well as the WGA strike. Assuming they are at all affecting news of the show’s renewal.

But not to put too fine a point on it, the real reason the show hasn’t gotten renewed could be anyone’s guess as only company insiders are sure to have the full details. On the bright side however, a cancellation of the show is highly unlikely given the critical and general acclaim the series continues to receive.

Cancelling a show on a cliffhanger is nothing new for streaming services, but the hope is such will not be the case for this beloved series.
