Superman: Legacy – Inclusion of Supergirl Exposes Greater Connectivity for the DCU
It’s been recently rumoured that Supergirl will be joining the superpowered ensemble of Superman: Legacy. And honestly, it feels like a natural decision to take, given the fact the she is the cousin of the title character.
Which is why this writer is of the opinion that her involvement with the movie should have come first regardless of her importance to the story. This could be the reason news of her involvement on Superman: Legacy is only just surfacing.
If done right, naturally as has been speculated with other superpowered entities that will feature in Superman: Legacy. A Supergirl feature or cameo could also set the stage for her own solo film. A film which has been confirmed to happen at some point in DCU’s future – Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.
It’s also nice to see that much like how Superman: Legacy has the subtitle of ‘Legacy’. The upcoming Supergirl movie isn’t without its subtitle as well.
Be it intentional or not, James Gunn is already drawing parallels between the two and this writer believes it is for the best since they are in fact related.
Switching Up The Narrative
But beyond Supergirl connectivity, what other deductions can be made?. Since Superman: Legacy is the official start to the incoming DCU. It is only natural that the movie serves as the foundation for the franchise. Much like how 2008’s Iron Man served the MCU.
However, unlike the MCU where the story was highly contained with the only connection to the wider franchise being the cameo from Nick Fury towards the film’s end. Superman: Legacy is instead going the opposite route by filling its casting ranks with characters that will in one way or another make up the future of the DCU.
With more casting info still to come, it could stand to reason that more characters that will impact the future of the DCU may be on the horizon.
But this shouldn’t come as a surprise because James Gunn did make it clear from day one that the DCU is not going to be void of ‘life’ even though it is a rebooted world.
So while the MCU started from scratch with 2008’s Iron Man, the DCU is more of a soft reboot in comparison with Superman: Legacy.
