The Recurring Theme of Genocidal Threats in Captain Marvel Stories Across the MCU
Following the release of The Marvels. A common trend in Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel-centric stories can be deduced. The trend being stories involving the title character usually have genocidal villains or centre around the genocide of a certain race or multiple races.
How It Has Played Out
Captain Marvel – In the 2019 solo outing for titular character, she found herself unintentionally embroiled in a war between the Kree and the Skrulls.
As was later revealed, the Kree happened to be an imperialistic lot who didn’t want to share the galaxy with the Skrulls. And thanks to their advancements both technological and otherwise, the Kree had the upper hand, and sought to wipe out the Skrulls completely had Captain Marvel not intervened.
Avengers: Endgame – When Captain Marvel would later band with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, it was mostly a marriage of convenience. Set in motion by Nick Fury.
Thanos was the greatest threat the MCU had witnessed and his ideals on the balance of life and resources, ultimately hinged on genocide. But on a universal level as opposed to the more niche dealings of the Kree.
The Marvels – Looking again at the villainous dealings of Dar-Benn in Marvel Studios latest theatrical feature. Dar-Benn fuses revenge and patriotism in a terrifying manner. Because by going after planets that are familiar to Captain Marvel. In a bid to forcefully transfer certain resources to her homeworld, Hala. For the sake of writing Captain Marvel’s wrongs, she almost brings about the extinction of the civilisation present on such planets.
As the story of Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel continues to be told in the MCU. It will be intriguing to see what other genocidal entity she squares of with in the future.
Although, the growing threat Kang poses on the Multiverse will require the hero’s attention in the nearest future. As well as the universal reboot rumoured to take place.
