Unveiling the Intriguing Future of the Scream Franchise: Decoding the Copycat Essence in Recent Installments.
What’s Your Favourite Scary Movie?.
The Scream movies have been entertaining horror and cinema stans alike for 27 years now, and that is in no small part, thanks to the creative direction that has carried the franchise all these years. Especially when it came to refocusing the franchise by swapping out franchise alum, Sidney Prescott for new franchise caretakers, The Carpenter Sisters.
With the most recent installment (Scream VI) now a [distant] memory, but a strong entry regardless. It is quite doubtful that Paramount will want to stop at just a sequel to the requel.
Expectations For Scream VII/7
Since its inception, the franchise has always paralleled and parodied itself, which is in fact further fuel for its meta-sensitivities beyond just serving up nostalgia. However, since Scream 5 or rather the franchise’s requel movie of 2022. There has been a certain to uniqueness attached to the recreation of moments from previous entries.
Put simply, by subverting expectations or preconceived notions, the filmmakers are able to keep the franchise fresh in as much as a large part of what happens in the recent movies are recycled story beats from previous films.
For instance, Scream 5 much like the 1st film prominently featured Billy Loomis with the final confrontation [in both movies] taking place in Stu Macher’s house. Likewise a proper examination of Scream 2 & 6 explores how family griviances give rise to vengeful pursuits — not to mention the very on-the-nose ‘college callbacks’ the 6th film also featured.
Judging by the aforementioned trends, it could stand to reason that Scream 7 could heavily parallel the 3rd film than all the other movies within the franchise canon. Of course, as earlier stated, one shouldn’t expect a play-by-play recreation of events which is what has made the reinvention of the franchise thus far, very applaudable.
For now though, the expectation is simply to know when or if Scream 7 will indeed happen.
