Venom 3 Ends the Franchise
Seems like a lifetime ago but the succinctly renamed SSU (Sony’s Spider-Man Universe) began with the 2018 smash hit, Venom.
In fact, in retrospect, 2018 seems to have been a very good year for Sony’s Spider-Man centric cinematic outings. As later that year the Spider-verse was birth with Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse. Which debuted December 14, 2018 with Venom coming out earlier in October 5, 2018.
Althought, the Venom movies are not known for their critical acclaim. Their financial acclaim however is where their success story lies. And with the laudable back to back earnings of the first two films. Sony has taken this an indication to forge ahead with their Spider-Man centric cinematic universe once again. After the failed attempt of The Amazing Spider-Man duology.
The End is Near
Venom is currently the longest running franchise in the SSU. And as is usually the case with many comic book blockbusters in Hollywood. Venom 3 may be seeking to round out the franchise in a satisfactory way.
Despite the fact that neither Venom 1 or 2 ended on a cliffhanger. A trilogy is often the point where most franchises will either reinvent themselves going forward or simply close out the main character’s story.
For Venom, the former seems to be the case since it now in fact part of two larger franchises; the SSU (which it originated) and the MCU (based on the No Way Home cameo). Also with Sony now full force with the SSU as indicated by the other two in-franchise films set for release this year. With many others in development.
It’s befitting that Venom takes a back seat to allow the other characters and stories have their moments.
In essence, Venom could make cameos and appearances across the host of other SSU projects.
Serving as the SSU’s connective tissue. But to score yet another solo feature would be better saved for a much later date.
