What If…? Season 2: Strange Supreme Assembles the New Guardians of the Multiverse
Season 2 of the highly acclaimed MCU animated TV series, What If…? Is in full swing and will soon come to an end. As a matter of fact.
Unlike the first season, the 2nd season has also treated audience to MCU hypotheticals whilst injecting some original narratives. Particularly that of Episode 6 where a completely new MCU original character has debuted in the form of Kahhori.
A character who might arguably be this season’s most powerful character. Hence, the reason why she has inadvertently caught the attention of Strange Supreme.
Another Multiversal Threat?
The season 1 finale of What If…? is most likely old news at this point. But the title of the season 2 finale has this writer thinking we might see a reenactment.
Basically the title of Season 2 Episode 9 seems to be a play of words on Season 1 Episode 9 title. Save for the character names. And with Strange Supreme’s possible recruitment of Kahhori at the end of Episode 6. The Multiverse may need defending yet again.
This time likely from the new roster that will have been introduced to us throughout this season.
Why Strange Supreme?
Strange Supreme transversing the multiverse to gather together heroes for a possible finale showdown shouldn’t be so strange. As he was shown to be the only other character in season 1 of What If…? to possess multiversal awareness.
The other character of course being the malevolent Infinity Ultron. But this still begs the question. Why is The Watcher not performing this recruitment as he had done previously in season 1?. After all, the character is still fully present in the sophomore season, as he continues to observe and narrate the hypothetical events to audiences.
An answer that comes to mind is most likely the fact that The Watcher doesn’t want to break his oath a second time. Because as has been said a handful of times by the character, The Watcher is supposed to only observe and not intervene.
So it’s possible the role of intervention has been handed down to Strange Supreme since he currently happens to be the only hero The Watcher has an acquaintance with that also possesses multiversal awareness.
This way, The Watcher gets to keep his oath whilst making sure no harm comes to the multiverse.
Again, it may also be the MCU’s way of foreshadowing Dr. Strange’s role in the future of the live action territory of The Multiverse Saga.
