Zack Snyder’s ‘Rebel Moon’: Cosmic Saga Set to Redefine Streaming with Multi-Media Franchise
The prolific yet ever controversial filmmaker, Zack Snyder is set to kick-start his original cosmic IP, Rebel Moon. Which is glaringly inspired by George Lucas’s cosmic IP, Star Wars.
The road has been fraught with challenges, as is usually the case with any original cinematic property.
Initially starting off as a Star Wars movie pitch some 20 years ago. Zack has eventually found a trusting partner in Netflix. The company is of course partners with him on his Army of the Dead verse. So when the opportunity came for more IP driven works from the filmmaker constantly making headlines. It was no question for Netflix to oblige.
Moreover, even as Rebel Moon is set to launch, Zack & Netflix already have ambitious plans for the franchise. Plans which extend across various media beyond feature films and mini/multi series.
Indeed in the nearest future to come, the cosmic saga is poised to be a global phenomenon. And could very well rub shoulders with many of the current cinematic juggernauts. Despite its main existence as a streaming endeavour.
With all that introduction and praise out of the way, just what can audiences expect from the franchise.
For starters, a two-part feature is already set for release on the streamer. Then there’s also at least another feature being planned with a bunch of series to boot.
In addition to all this, various tie-in media consisting of books, comics, a podcast, a graphic novel, a short film, a video game/RPG & VR experience are being planned.
Furthermore, the franchise has also been teased to exist in the same cinematic universe as Zack Snyder’s other Netflix franchise, Army of the Dead. The zombie apocalypse movie which would go on to win an “Oscars Fan Favourite” at the 94th annual Academy Awards.
Finally, Rebel Moon is set to release both an R-rated, directorial cut and a more crowd pleasing PG-13 version.
Zack Snyder is usually known for his ‘some-what’ extremist and graphic style of filmmaking. And with this, the trend seems to be continuing. The R-rated version is also teased to have an hour more of content than that of the PG-13 feature.
Rebel Moon: A Child of Fire releases December 22, 2023.
Rebel Moon: The Scargiver releases April 19, 2024.
